Tips and Tricks for Keeping Your School Whiteboards Clean...

Classrooms are the building blocks of education: that’s where dreams, ideas, and lessons come to life. With that, every classroom needs certain elements to have a productive learning space. One of those is whiteboards, yet they dirty easily and become a nuisance to clean. Still, here are some tips and tricks for keeping your school whiteboards clean for an effective lesson plan.

Erase After Use

While this may seem obvious, it’s worth mentioning you should erase the whiteboard after every use. Chemicals in whiteboard markers build residue and film over the whiteboard, making it harder to erase in the future. While your whiteboard originally was glossy, this residue can leave it matte and dirty. Not to mention that you’ll continue to see past lessons when you need space for current or future ones. Avoid this by erasing often.

Use Commercial Whiteboard Cleaner

If you continue to see shadows of past lesson plans, use a commercial whiteboard cleaning fluid. These have chemicals needed to remove even the toughest inks. Commercial cleaning fluids commonly use isopropyl alcohol and water as the most effective whiteboard cleaner. That’s because it leaves the whiteboard glossy and spotless. When using it, spray the fluid on a microfiber cloth and wipe. While it may take a little elbow grease, you should see any marker shadows disappear. Let the board air dry, or use a clean, dry microfiber cloth and wipe away any remaining cleaning fluid.

Ceramic vs. Porcelain

Also, consider the type of whiteboard you use. There are two main types of school whiteboards to consider for your classroom: ceramic and porcelain. Ceramic boards are high-quality, durable, and more resistant to stains, dents, or damage. They are also more cost-efficient than porcelain. On the other hand, porcelain boards have more layers, which requires less cleaning and maintenance. Also, markers are less likely to leave a shadow effect.

Consider a Homemade Cleaning Alternative

Contrarily, a neat tip for keeping your school whiteboards clean is to use homemade cleaning fluid. These are more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. For example, warm, soapy water, window cleaner, and peroxide can work as an efficient cleaning alternative. Additionally, toothpaste, coffee grounds, vinegar, and hand sanitizer have proven effective methods. Consider which ingredients you can use for this homemade cleaner, though. Some ingredients, like wax-based cleaners, may still leave a film on the whiteboard, making it difficult to use.
